Mobile Bay Area

Mobile, Alabama

Mobile was founded in 1702 by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, as the first capital of French Louisiana. Many downtown streets still carry their French names, and the square at the city's center is called Bienville Square. By the time the Americans arrived in Mobile in 1813 to occupy the city, it was already old enough to have passed through French, British and Spanish hands.

The Mobile Bay region is located in Southwest Alabama at the head of Mobile Bay. The region includes Mobile and Baldwin counties and covers an area of 2,829 square miles. Total population for the region in 2006 was 564,071. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2006). The Mobile Bay region has gained worldwide attention due to its incredible growth and the potential for more in the upcoming years.

Bill Seifert, 2008 Chairman of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce reflected on the accomplishments Mobile has seen in recent years - among them German steel giant ThyssenKrupp's decision to build a $3.7 billion steel plant here and the revitalization of the historic Battle House Hotel and its accompanying office tower. He told the crowd there is no reason to doubt Mobile can do more. (Mobile Press Register, Jan. 16, 2008)
